Publish Date: 2005-05-01
Features: This book comprehensively reflects the current state of writings on Huizhou architecture and strives to delve deeper into chapters that interest the author, avoiding a textbook-like approach with equal effort. In terms of research considerations, Chapters 1 to 5 primarily adopt traditional architectural history methods. In Chapter 6, "Huizhou Architectural Landscape Imagery and Artistic Realm," and Chapter 10, "Aesthetic Ideals and Aesthetic Characteristics of Huizhou Architecture," the author attempts to analyze Huizhou architecture using new methods from the humanities and social sciences. Regarding the chapter "Feng Shui and Huizhou Architecture," Feng Shui is a sensitive topic. Considering the words of Qing Dynasty scholar Zhao Jishi, who said, "Feng Shui beliefs are particularly emphasized by the Huizhou people," and the fact that almost all existing Huizhou villages are located according to Feng Shui principles, the author decided to include some discussion on Feng Shui. Feng Shui is an experiential knowledge form in traditional Chinese culture, with its essence lying in its comprehensiveness. Therefore, it cannot be translated into modern analytical methods.
