Book Description:
Sketching is an important form of expression in painting. It can train artists to observe and depict objects quickly and accurately, while also serving as a vital means for accumulating and recording materials and creating preliminary sketches for larger works. Sketching itself possesses independent aesthetic value, often reflecting the wisdom and emotional sparks of an artist through the most vivid artistic language.
Throughout history, all great masters of painting have demonstrated exceptional sketching skills. From Leonardo da Vinci of the Renaissance to Picasso of the modern era, many artists have left behind a wealth of highly vivid and stylistically diverse sketches. Sketching is the most свободное form for artists to express their thoughts and emotions, resulting in a wide variety of styles and techniques. All of these aspects are worth serious study and learning.
Due to the significance of sketching in painting, some art colleges often include it as a subject in their professional exams.
So, how should candidates prepare and improve their sketching skills?
We believe the first step is to clarify the exam content. Most institutions test short-term or memory-based sketches of figures, with occasional additions of environments and props. After understanding the exam content, the preparation can be divided into two parts:
(1) Preparation Phase
This is a relatively extended period where effective efforts must be made to reach one's personal best. Specific approaches include:
1. Understanding anatomical structures. Begin by emulating numerous books on this topic to deepen your knowledge. Without this understanding, it will be impossible to grasp the various patterns of human figures, and your artwork will inevitably lack depth, simplicity, and dullness.
2. Copying sketches by renowned artists and art students. Through copying, you can appreciate the essence and techniques of masterpieces; by comparing student works with your own, you gain more practical insights and assistance. Practice has proven this to be a highly effective and cost-efficient learning method.
3. Extensive life-drawing exercises. Improvement in sketching hinges on quantity—typically, draw for 20-30 minutes at a time. Shorter practice sessions should also be incorporated to keep yourself in a state of excitement. Besides full-body and half-body works, it’s necessary to practice detailed sketches of limbs (like hands, feet, and ears) and compositions combining people and environments. During this phase, focus on cross-training among these three areas, consult teachers frequently, and learn from other students’ works.
(2) Exam Phase
After thorough preparation, during the exam, pay attention to the following:
1. Maintain a calm mindset. Stay focused but avoid nervousness. Remind yourself that tension and panic only lead to poor performance—your goal is to maintain your usual level of skill, with the hope of exceeding expectations.
2. Ensure sufficient tools. While sketching tools vary, softer pencils are recommended for exams. Prepare at least two or more pencils you’re comfortable with. Given the limited exam time, any tool-related mistakes leave no room for adjustments.
3. Focus on the overall composition. Lines should flow smoothly, capturing the primary dynamic. Remember: the big picture is always more impactful than intricate details.
The above discussions cover our understanding of sketching and provide guidance on preparing for and handling exam sketching. As candidates, recognize that diligence is key, and effective methods enhance learning efficiency. Therefore, practice more and think critically. No pain, no gain.
