This collection of novels strips away many external details for realism, focusing instead on the inner world of characters, their personalities, and hidden inner passions. Readers notice that the author has ruthlessly cut out everything he deemed unnecessary—be it the madman in Malaya or the strange woman—all nameless and faceless. Only details that reflect the characters' inner passions and scenes that enhance the novel's atmosphere are vividly depicted: the tropical jungle that drives one mad under the scorching sun, a spooky corner of the deck in the dead of night, the parched, cracked earth, the dimly lit alley, the eyes of a dog who begs in a masochistic frenzy, the lips of a girl yearning for tenderness like rain. The portrayals in these novels are more vivid and striking than reality, leaving readers not with intricate plots or magnificent scenes, but with living characters, fierce passions, a sense of their soul's tremors, and heart-wrenching groans.
At this very moment, I, a girl not yet a woman, grow into a woman, and this woman will belong to you forever.
Sometimes the world before my eyes is pitch black, perhaps I won’t even be able to write this letter—but I must summon all my strength to write to you, just once. You, my dear, whom I have never known!
I have only you, yet you have never known me, and I have always loved you.
My entire life has always belonged to you, yet you have always known nothing of my life.
I have given my entire life to you, yet I have never received a single letter from you. I wait and wait, like a desperate woman!
Book Description:
Stefan Zweig (1881–1942) was an internationally renowned Austrian writer known for his ability to recreate characters' personalities and life experiences from a psychological perspective, particularly excelling in portraying female psychology and creating female characters. This book is one of his representative works, telling the story of a stranger who, in her final moments of life, pours her lifelong devotion into writing a poignant and moving long letter to a famous writer, exposing her desperate love for him. Through the most painful experiences of a woman, the depth of love and self-sacrifice are revealed. Maxim Gorky once sincerely praised this novel as "truly a remarkable masterpiece." In this collection of Zweig’s captivating psychological fiction, each moving story is told in his signature style, and the joys, sorrows, confusion, and despair of individual characters seep into your soul, touching the deepest corner of your being. The subtle, myriad emotions of humanity, each uniquely beautiful, transform into a blend of illusion and reality.
A man receives an unsigned and addressless letter on his 41st birthday. It comes from a woman on her deathbed, telling the story of a love so profound that the man at the receiving end knows nothing of it. The story begins 18 years earlier, with her first encounter with the man—a child then, who later experienced the obsession of youth and the passion of youth, even falling into the world of prostitution, but never ceasing to love him, finally confessing only in her final moments. She lies on the bleak deck of fate, the white foam carrying her toward nothingness.
