Features: English majors in higher-level courses at universities and colleges in China (including normal colleges and education schools) typically offer two courses: "History of British and American Literature" and "Selected Readings of British and American Literature." It is advisable to teach "History of Literature" alongside "Selected Readings of Literature," as the two complement each other and failure to do so may lead to disconnection. Therefore, it is necessary to compile a textbook that combines both literary history and selected readings. This combined textbook is designed for use by senior-level English majors at universities and colleges. The historical portion of the book provides a concise overview, while the author and work sections include: (1) detailed introductions to authors; (2) summaries of works (if the selected text is a fragment of a work); (3) key selected readings, with a focus on detailed coverage of more important texts; and (4) annotations. In the classroom, teaching primarily focuses on the works, while the historical portion is left to the teacher to guide and serve as a reference for students. Similarly, the combined history and selected readings section is also intended for teacher guidance and student reference. By integrating both history and selected readings in teaching, it can achieve twice the result with half the effort, yielding excellent teaching outcomes, which is the purpose of compiling this book.
