The book collects characters from ancient inscriptions on metal and stone, and arranges them into couplets with creative composition. It was once a refined pastime for scholars and literati, as well as a common form of traditional calligraphy art. In the market, there are many collections of character couplets compiled into albums, such as the popular "Shiguwen" (Seal Script) character couplet album and the "Chushi Song" (Ode to the Expedition) character couplet album. These are collections of couplets based on the calligraphy of a single master imitating a particular stele or collection. Another example is the Wuxi Qin family, who extensively collected various steles and inscriptions, compiling characters into couplets, which is also helpful for those learning calligraphy.
This book has the following three main features:
1. Carefully selected steles and collections, systematic and comprehensive. Most existing albums of character couplets are based on personal preferences.
2. Elegant wording and cohesive meaning, with newly composed couplets. While existing albums of character couplets certainly include many well-regarded and skillfully crafted couplets, they also contain awkward or stale ones.
3. Computer-assisted character collection to preserve authenticity. Most existing albums of character couplets are handwritten by collectors, often reflecting their personal style and losing the original essence of the steles, which is not conducive to practice. Additionally, some versions only record the couplets without calligraphy, requiring users to search for characters one by one, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive.
