He passed the provincial examination as the top candidate (Jieyuan). Later, he was implicated in a bribery case in the imperial examination, suffered setbacks in his official career, and also faced family misfortunes. In his later years, he built a "Taohu An" in the northwest of Suzhou City and became famous for selling poetry and paintings. His personal setbacks led him to adopt a unrestrained and hedonistic lifestyle, "free and unrestrained, fond of pleasure and beauty," but in reality, he often vented his frustrations through poetry and painting.
