Born in the 23rd year of the Guangxu reign, he was a great-grandson of Emperor Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty, the grandson of Prince Gongzhong Yixu, the second son of Prince Beile Zaiying, and passed away on November 18, 1963, in Taiwan. In his youth, P'u Hsin-Ch'u studied at the law school established by the Qing court for nobles. After graduation, he went to Qingdao to study German at Lixian College and studied abroad in Germany twice, obtaining doctorates in astronomy and biology from Berlin University. However, what brought P'u Shang to fame both in China and abroad was not these achievements, but his profound expertise in calligraphy, painting, and poetry. He combined poetry, calligraphy, and painting on one sheet, creating a harmonious and exquisite combination. He had been active in the Chinese painting world for decades and was hailed in the 1940s as the "Southern Zhang, Northern P'u."
