Features: Clinical medical departments have traditionally been divided into two major categories: Internal Medicine and Surgery. The concept of surgery refers to diseases that require surgical treatment, while internal medicine refers to diseases that can be treated non-surgically with medication, without a distinction between outpatient and inpatient diseases. The book Outpatient Surgery does not aim to divide surgery into outpatient surgery and inpatient surgery. Instead, it focuses on diagnosing diseases by analyzing patients' symptoms. Outpatient and inpatient care are integral and inseparable. Inpatients are admitted from outpatient and emergency departments, making outpatient and emergency departments the first places where patients' disease symptoms and chief complaints are encountered. They serve as the central hub for disease triage and the primary point of patient admission. In all textbooks, diseases are typically organized by disease names, with discussions on epidemiology, etiology, symptomatology, diagnosis, and treatment. Symptoms are sought after diseases. However, in outpatient and emergency settings, what is first encountered is not a specific, clear disease but rather one or more symptoms and signs. These require the primary care physician (outpatient or emergency) to analyze and synthesize them to make a diagnosis or preliminary assessment. How to analyze and synthesize, and how to arrive at a diagnosis, is the purpose of this book. Outpatient Surgery begins with symptoms, moving from symptoms to diagnosis, and from etiology to pathophysiology, in a progressive manner. It does not seek symptoms after diseases but diagnoses diseases based on symptoms. We hope that this approach will provide inspiration and assistance to young doctors and clinical interns in their work, which is the original intention and purpose of writing this book.
This book is primarily written by senior professors and associate professors with rich clinical experience from the Department of Surgery at Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, along with contributions from some physicians from other hospitals. Due to the large number of authors, there are slight variations in writing style. Although the manuscript has been repeatedly revised and adjusted, it remains imperfect, and errors and omissions are inevitable. We sincerely hope that readers will kindly provide feedback and valuable suggestions so that we can make corrections in the future.
