In Chinese language teaching, there is always great emphasis on improving the ability to recognize and use Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires the correct use of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation lying in characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of Chinese, such as the lack of extensive morphological forms, relatively simple grammatical structures, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a focus on compound words built on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the mere realm of pure shape recognition and is closely linked to the study of Chinese vocabulary. This is why we prioritized characters and words when planning supplementary materials for Chinese language teaching in schools and universities.
The Character and Word Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, with three dedicated to single characters and three to compound words. Improving the understanding and use of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need in individual Chinese language learning, making this series of reference books helpful for the general public as well. Emphasizing fundamental and commonly used elements was a key principle in the creation of this series. To this end, we made the following efforts:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words address word meaning, similar/synonymous pronunciation and form, as well as easily confused or mistaken words. These six topics are both fundamental and important in Chinese language learning.
2. Selection of Analyzed Characters and Words: The analysis is limited to commonly used words. Single characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most common and 1,000 less common characters, with some general-use characters also included. The selection of compound words is based on research in lexical metrology. For instance, synonyms are generally chosen based on data from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, with the selection roughly standardized within 8,548 commonly used words. Homophones are selected with a focus on those that are highly common, phonetically identical or similar, yet semantically distinct and prone to confusion, including dialectal terms that are easily mixed with standard Mandarin pronunciations. For heterographic words, the selection and analysis are conducted using a massive corpus containing billions of characters, ensuring objectivity and accuracy.
3. Presentation of Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on distinguishing easily confused or mistaken aspects. Most traditional dictionaries and reference books focus on individual characters and words, seeking completeness in their internal definitions. However, to achieve a deep understanding and proper use of a character or word, it is essential to recognize and differentiate neighboring terms and their subtle differences. Providing this kind of information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books aims to deliver to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: Efforts are made to use simple and accessible language, striving for clarity and depth in explanations.
