Features: Our primary and secondary school Chinese language teaching has always placed great emphasis on improving students' ability to recognize and use Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires correct usage of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and chapters, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two fundamental units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger language units such as sentences, paragraphs, and chapters. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a predominance of monosyllabic words, and the prevalence of compound words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the combination of Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. Therefore, Chinese character teaching has gone beyond the mere study of pure shapes and is closely linked to the learning of Chinese vocabulary. This is the reason why we chose to focus on characters and words when planning supplementary materials for primary and secondary school Chinese language teaching.
The Dictionary of Character and Word Analysis consists of six volumes, three of which are about individual characters and the other three about compound words. Improving one's understanding and use of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need in language learning. Therefore, this series of reference books will also benefit the general public. Emphasizing foundation and commonality is the principle behind the compilation of this series, and we have made efforts in the following areas:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six distinct topics. The three volumes on individual characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words address issues of word meaning, similar pronunciation and form, and easily confused or misspelled words. These six topics are both fundamental and important in Chinese language learning.
2. Selection of Analyzed Characters and Words: The analysis is limited to commonly used words. Individual characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most commonly used characters and 1,000 less commonly used characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words is based on the findings of lexical measurement research. For example, synonyms are mostly chosen according to the data on word usage frequency from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, with a general guideline of 8,548 common words. The selection of near-sound words focuses on those that are highly frequent, share the same or similar pronunciation but have different meanings and are prone to confusion, including those that are easily confused between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciations. For variant characters, the selection and analysis are conducted using large-scale corpus databases containing billions of characters, ensuring more objective and accurate results.
3. Presentation of Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on clarifying easily confused or misused elements. Traditional dictionaries and encyclopedias primarily focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough internal definitions. However, to gain a deep and correct understanding of a character or word, it is essential to study the adjacent words and understand their subtle differences, thereby mastering their distinct usages. Providing this kind of information and assistance is exactly what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Interpretation and Analysis: The book uses clear and accessible language as much as possible, striving to achieve a balance between depth and simplicity.
