The eldest son Mitka is suspected and imprisoned; the second son Ivan is filled with guilt and madness; Smelkakov also commits suicide due to mental collapse; only the innocent and kind youngest son Alyosha remains, who has a loving heart toward everyone. He is unwilling to stay alone in his hometown and leaves. The Karamazov family finally ceases to exist.
