How to treat ovarian cysts well

Patient's question:

Recently, I suddenly felt my abdomen getting bigger, and it was accompanied by abdominal pain. My menstrual cycle is also irregular. How should ovarian cysts be treated?

Doctor's answer:

Ovarian cysts can be physiological (meaning they are normal fluctuations in the menstrual cycle and can naturally disappear) or pathological. Physiological cysts do not require surgery, while pathological cysts often need surgery for definitive diagnosis and additional treatment. For women of childbearing age, if an ovarian cyst is detected, the next course of action depends on the nature of the cyst. Ultrasound results are very helpful for diagnosis. If MRI indicates that the cyst is anechoic (without echoes) and non-segmented, it is advisable to wait and see for 3 months. After 3 months, a repeat MRI should be performed. If the cyst still exists, surgery should be considered. For all other types of cysts, in most cases, they are pathological and surgery is necessary for definitive diagnosis.
