Features: Ancient Chinese fiction commentary is a unique cultural phenomenon, not a singular form of literary criticism. Although commentary appeared in Chinese fiction history in the guise of criticism, its actual connotations far exceed the scope of literary criticism. In the history of Chinese fiction, particularly in fiction creation during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, commentary played a role far beyond the boundaries of criticism, forming multiple frameworks such as critical appreciation, textual revision, and theoretical interpretation. Therefore, our research on fiction commentary should also be approached from a pluralistic perspective. Specifically, the study of ancient fiction commentary can be organized and explored through three relationships:
1. Revealing the value of fiction commentary by examining its relationship with the history of ancient Chinese fiction creation.
2. Investigating the connotations of fiction commentary by studying its relationship with the history of ancient Chinese fiction dissemination.
3. Evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of fiction commentary by analyzing its relationship with the history of fiction theory and criticism.
In the brief clarification and analysis of fiction commentary provided above, it is evident that fiction commentary is indeed a complex composite. Only by observing it from a comprehensive perspective can we better approach its original state and accurately assess its value.
