What is nipple retraction?

Patient's question:

I am 25 years old, female. I recently noticed that my nipples seem to be slightly inverted while taking a bath. My friend said it might be gynecomastia. What is gynecomastia?

Doctor's answer:

The nipple is normally cylindrical and protrudes from the skin surface. If the nipple does not protrude but instead indents inward toward the areola, it is referred to as nipple inversion. During pregnancy, nipple inversion can be corrected by gently pulling on the nipple to help it return to its normal position. Otherwise, it may affect future breastfeeding. For patients with severe nipple inversion, surgical correction may be necessary. For those who are not pregnant, it is important to preserve the ability to breastfeed as much as possible. Patients should seek systematic and standardized examinations at reputable Grade III-A hospitals as soon as possible based on their specific condition to receive targeted treatment and achieve a quicker recovery.
