Features: This is a special and highly regarded diary. The author, Toshirō Hoshino, was born on April 27, 1912, in Tsubo County, Danjo District, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. In August 1937, at the age of 25, Hoshino was conscripted into the Imperial Japanese Army as a non-commissioned officer in the 20th Infantry Regiment of the 16th Division. He participated in battles to occupy Tianjin, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xuzhou, Wuhan, and Xiangdong. Due to illness, he returned to Japan in September 1939. In March 1944, he was conscripted again to participate in the invasion of China. In August 1945, he surrendered to Chinese forces in Shanghai. He returned to Japan in January 1946. Toshirō Hoshino had the habit of keeping a diary, in which he meticulously recorded his observations and experiences during the invasion of China. The diary consists of five volumes and 370,000 words.
