This book is the Shanghan Lun volume of the Chart-Explained Series on Basic TCM Disciplines. It incorporates the strengths of various editions of Shanghan Lun textbooks and follows the original layout of the Zhao-era Song Dynasty version. The text is divided into 8 chapters based on the original examples of differentiating conditions:
- Differentiating Taiyang disease with pulse and symptom treatment
- Differentiating Yangming disease with pulse and symptom treatment
- Differentiating Shaoyang disease with pulse and symptom treatment
- Differentiating Taiyin disease with pulse and symptom treatment
- Differentiating Shaoyin disease with pulse and symptom treatment
- Differentiating Jueyin disease with pulse and symptom treatment
- Differentiating Huoluo disease with pulse and treatment
- Differentiating Yin-Yang exchange and post-recovery labor fatigue with pulse and symptom treatment
Each chapter is organized into three sections based on the original content and meaning: "Onset and Progression," "Pathogenesis and Syndrome Differentiation," and "Prescription-Syndrome and Treatment." Under each section, every entry includes four items: [Original Text], [Summary], [Illustration], and [Remarks].
The [Illustration] section uses concise and intuitive structural diagrams to express the intrinsic logic of the original text, the causal relationships between pathogenesis and symptoms, treatment approaches, and the composition of prescriptions, making it easier to understand, master, and review.
The [Remarks] section is the culmination of the author's 30+ years of research on Shanghan Lun. It explains how to extract disease symptoms from concise entries, compares suspected pathogenesis and syndrome differentiation, suggests relevant passages for cross-reference, identifies phrases that are not symptom descriptions but merely for syndrome differentiation, clarifies ambiguous terms with Zhang Jing's original intent, and reveals the treatment and medication principles of Zhang Jing's time.
Through a combination of text and illustrations, this book presents the profound principles of Shanghan Lun in a concise and intuitive manner, explaining them in a simple and clear way that aligns with contemporary cognitive psychology and processes. It serves as a guide for beginners and a stepping stone for advanced learners to refine their knowledge. Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine at all levels can draw wisdom from the ancient sages and benefit lifelong.
