Herman Melville (1819–1891) may be one of the greatest American writers of the 19th century. He was born in New York City, and his father went bankrupt when he was very young, so Melville dropped out of school at the age of 15. Subsequently, before dedicating himself to writing in 1844, he engaged in various jobs and gained extensive experience in overseas shipping. His main works include: White-Jacket, Typee, Omoo, and Moby Dick. Moby Dick was published in 1851, during a period when American society was filled with great optimism and confidence. In Moby Dick, Melville may have shown the world a "dream of human reason controlling such a rational creature as a human." Captain Ahab is a demagogue who takes democracy to an extreme.
