Late at night, a lonely young man is knocked down by a lake-green Fiat car on the streets of Paris. He gets into the police car with the owner of the vehicle, a woman named Jacqueline Borselange, and is taken to the hospital. When he regains consciousness, he finds himself alone in a clinic, the woman gone, and he has received a sum of money. To uncover the truth, after leaving the clinic, he begins to search for and investigate the woman based on an uncertain address, with the lake-green Fiat becoming the most important clue in his pursuit. This woman reminds him of another woman, and the lake-green Fiat reminds him of a small truck. The entire search process is also a process of reminiscence. The novel depicts the young man, as he searches, remembering fragments of his early life and re-examining his past. In the end, he finds Jacqueline Borselange, and everything returns to normal.
