■ General Introduction
New Interchange is one of the most popular and influential English textbooks internationally. It summarizes eight years of classroom teaching experience globally and has undergone comprehensive improvements and enhancements based on extensive feedback from students and teachers. The main revisions include: new conversation exercises (Conversations), new cultural snippets (Snapshots), new reading exercises (Readings), more comprehensive grammar explanations and activities (GrammarFocusmodelsandactivities), and richer listening materials. At the same time, the teacher's book, workbook, and video content have also been extensively revised.
New Interchange is a large-scale English textbook written for learners in non-English-speaking countries. The content covers the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as pronunciation training and vocabulary expansion. It particularly emphasizes the development of listening and communication skills. The primary goal of this book is to cultivate English communicative competence, i.e., the ability to flexibly use English according to communicative contexts, purposes, and audiences. The book primarily uses American English, but its content is not limited to any specific country, region, or culture. Instead, it reflects the richness and diversity of English as an international language of communication. This textbook is divided into four levels: Starter, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3.
Starter Level:
Designed for "true" beginners with no English foundation, this level explains basic grammar structures, vocabulary, and language functions. Upon completion, learners can master 1,000 active vocabulary words.
Level 1:
For learners with a basic English proficiency, this level aims to further develop grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, enabling learners to reach a lower-intermediate to intermediate level. Upon completion, learners can master 2,200 active vocabulary words.
Level 2:
For learners with a lower-intermediate to upper-intermediate English proficiency, this level aims to further develop grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, enabling learners to reach an intermediate level. Upon completion, learners can master 3,400 active vocabulary words.
Level 3:
For learners with an intermediate English proficiency, this level focuses on developing the ability to communicate in relatively fluent and accurate English. Upon completion, learners can master 4,700 active vocabulary words.
Through a variety of stimulating and challenging exercises, the textbook helps students further consolidate and develop their English communicative abilities. In addition to applied skill exercises, the textbook also includes advanced discourse comprehension exercises. Listening exercises include: listening to narratives, listening to advertisements, listening to discussions, and listening to interviews. Reading activities include: cross-cultural communication themes, lifestyle themes, different value themes, etc., all using authentic reading passages. Upon completing all four levels, learners can achieve an intermediate to upper-intermediate level.
