The poetry of the Tang Dynasty and the ci of the Song Dynasty both represent the unique achievements of their respective eras in literary history. The ci emerged during the Sui and Tang dynasties alongside the emerging music—Yanyue. Yanyue was a product of the fusion of traditional Chinese music and Western music, and it was a vibrant lyrical music of its time. The ci was originally lyrics composed for the different tunes of this new music, and it was then called quzi or quzi ci, which can be considered abbreviations of the former. Born in the folk, the ci was at its most vibrant during the Tang and Song dynasties. The Tang and Song ci contain a rich and profound life essence that connects past and present, which is the life force of the Tang and Song ci. The core and origin of this life essence is the boundless cherishing, longing, and devotion to life. Since life is only once for each individual, the life essence in the Tang and Song ci can evoke the "emotional resonance" of countless later readers who also love life, making the ci a "living literature" that maintains its artistic vitality.
This ci selection includes twenty-three important ci poets from the late Tang and Five Dynasties, Northern Song, and Southern Song, as well as seventy-one representative ci pieces. In form, they are divided into xiaoling (short ci), zhongdiào (medium-length ci), and chángdiào (long ci), while in content, they cover lyrical, narrative, and philosophical themes. For those interested in the Tang and Song ci, come and recite and appreciate the life sentiment of the Tang and Song ci poets, exploring the emotional patterns of the Chinese nation that have been passed down through generations.
