British gentleman Phileas Fogg bets £20,000 with his club friends to challenge the 80-day journey around the world. He sets off from London with his French servant Passepartout and begins his journey eastward in an orderly manner. In India, they rescue the young wife of a chief from a funeral pyre; in the United States, they are attacked by Native Americans; on the Atlantic Ocean, they disassemble their ship to refuel. These endless unexpected events keep readers on the edge of their seats. However, Mr. Fogg always handles these emergencies with composure and achieves victory. Phileas Fogg remains calm and unwavering no matter what happens.
Around the World in Eighty Days is a very modern work, telling people that contact with science can improve human conditions. Phileas Fogg is the science in motion, the science that materializes muscle, blood, will, and mind. The work reveals that science is invincible, but its value lies not in this, nor in the mechanical accuracy of the protagonist that moves people. The value of this novel lies in the gripping storyline that runs through it, the incredible bold imagination, the sharp satire on society, and the meticulous depiction of scenes. The most captivating part of this work is the surprising twist at the end.
If the author Jules Verne had not done a good job, Phileas Fogg might have been portrayed as a man as cold as ice. On the surface, Mr. Fogg appears rational and rigid, but in reality, he is a passionate man, though he did not show it in front of that poor woman. Without the French servant Passepartout, the adventures would have been dull and monotonous. Passepartout’s personality contrasts sharply with his rational and cold master, making the work more vivid and interesting. Another character introduced is the detective Fix, whose sense of smell is not fully developed, who mistakenly believes Phileas Fogg is a bank robber and follows him across the continent and through the oceans, engaging in a showdown with him. The portrayal of this character adds to the dramatic effect of the novel.
This work has been published for over ninety years, but its popularity has not diminished. Classics are like wine—they only get better with age. The influence of this outstanding work once again proves this truth.
