Features: This book is one of the most important works by the renowned writer Aleksey Tolstoy, hailed as a heroic epic depicting the Soviet people. In this monumental work, the author not only portrays the passionate love and winding experiences of two young couples and their "path of suffering," but also intertwines it with almost all major historical events of the time, painting a series of grand and tumultuous scenes. The scale and depth of the narrative, along with its numerous characters, fully demonstrate the characteristics of a great epic, making it one of the most significant works in Soviet literature. The Road of Life is one of the most important works by Soviet writer Aleksey Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1883–1945). This trilogy took Aleksey Tolstoy twenty years to write. The first part, The Sisters, began in July 1919, when he was living in Paris as an émigré. The second part, 1918, began in 1927. The third part, The Dark Morning, was completed on June 22, 1941, the very day Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Before the trilogy was published together, the author made careful revisions to the first two parts. The entire trilogy is a heroic epic depicting the Soviet people. It not only broadly portrays the life of Russia before, during, and after the revolution, painting a grand picture of the great historical events of that era; but it also vividly depicts the Russian people, under the leadership of the party, enduring trials and achieving great victories, especially the Russian intelligentsia's journey of being tempered by the revolution, aligning with the people, and gradually coming to understand the great truth of socialism. In 1943, Aleksey Tolstoy once told readers about the writing process of this epic: "The Road of Life is a painful, hopeful, joyful, disappointing, despairing, and revitalizing journey of the author's conscience, a reflection of the entire immense era. This era began with the early days of the First World War and ended with the early days of the Second World War." Therefore, the theme of this trilogy, as the author explicitly stated in his "Autobiography," is "the road home, to the motherland."
