Features: College English is divided into four volumes. With six class hours per week, it can be completed within two years. Volume 1 contains fifteen lessons, Volume 2 has eleven lessons, and Volumes 3 and 4 each have fifteen lessons. Short texts are taught one per week, while longer texts allow teachers to determine the teaching time. Each lesson includes a text, notes, and exercises. Volumes 1 and 2 also have vocabulary lists and supplementary reading materials. They are explained as follows:
Text: To expose students to authentic English from the beginning, all texts are original works by British and American authors. We only make minor revisions to a few texts based on teaching needs. In terms of selection, we strive to ensure the diversity, knowledge, and interest of the content.
Vocabulary List: Considering that students need time to adapt to university-level learning requirements, we provide a vocabulary list with Chinese definitions after each lesson in Volume 1. The vocabulary list in Volume 2 excludes commonly accessible words. After completing Volumes 1 and 2, students should develop a certain level of self-study ability, so Volumes 3 and 4 do not include vocabulary lists.
Notes: These include author introductions, background knowledge, grammar, and language issues that are not easily found in general reference books. Except for the notes in Volume 1, all notes in the other three volumes are in English.
Exercises: In Volumes 1 and 2, some longer texts have corresponding additional exercises, some of which are divided into Groups A and B. Teachers may consider teaching part of the text while assigning part of the exercises. Overall, the book offers a variety of exercise types and a relatively heavy workload, allowing teachers to select or supplement based on students' needs.
Supplementary Reading: To enhance students' linguistic intuition and vocabulary, Volumes 1 and 2 include supplementary reading materials after each lesson. We provide only notes and do not include vocabulary lists to gradually cultivate students' ability to use dictionaries.
