Features: This book is a research outcome of the Ministry of Education's "Reform Plan for Teaching Content and Curriculum Systems in Higher Education Towards the 21st Century," and is part of the "21st Century Curriculum Textbooks" and the Ministry of Education's "Key Textbooks for the 9th Five-Year Plan." It is revised based on the fourth edition of General Chemistry. The book emphasizes fundamental theories and knowledge in chemistry, focuses on the connection with engineering practice, pays attention to social and life hot issues, and emphasizes quality education. The book is divided into eight chapters. Chapters 1 to 4 are primarily based on the fundamental principles and mainlines of chemical reactions, introducing thermodynamics, chemical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, water chemistry, and electrochemistry, while also incorporating discussions on energy, atmospheric pollution, water pollution, and metal corrosion. Chapters 5 to 8 are primarily based on the theories of material structure and properties, using the latest achievements in theoretical chemistry to introduce the structures and characteristics of atoms, molecules, biological macromolecules, supramolecules, crystals, and their relationships with the periodic table. It also covers element chemistry, inorganic materials, polymer compounds and materials, and life and health. Each chapter includes content summaries and learning objectives, supplementary materials, summaries, out-of-class study resources, review questions, and exercises (with some optional exercises marked with and open-ended questions marked with ▲). The book also provides answers to exercises and appendices at the end. This book can be used as a textbook for non-chemical engineering majors in higher vocational and technical colleges.
..The second edition (revised in 1981) of this book won the first prize of the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Textbooks Award for Higher Education in the 7th (1976–1985) period in 1986; the third edition won the National Excellence Award for Outstanding Textbooks in Higher Education in the second (1986–1989) period in 1992; and the fourth edition won the second prize of the Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Progress Award in 1999.
