Features: Electronic dictionaries have long been the target of "resistance" from foreign language teachers, because the so-called "convenience" they offer masks the teachers' extreme indifference in explaining word definitions. Dictionaries with English examples for English learners are increasingly gaining popularity. While these large-volume reference books, which explain English words in English, may be initially frustrating for readers accustomed to Chinese explanations of English, they gradually become enjoyable as users adapt to the learning habits and recognize their practical benefits. English explanations allow English thinking to be reflected through English expression, and English examples bring readers a deeper understanding. Through long-term exposure to this context and the cultivation of thinking patterns, readers' English comprehension and application skills naturally improve step by step.
The learning methods in China's foreign language departments seem quite different from those in law schools, where legal terminology forms the foundation for law students to learn legal English. The Oxford Dictionary of Legal Terms we publish serves as an introductory and foundational reference for law students to learn English legal terminology. The dictionary is presented in a photocopied format, providing Chinese law students with an early opportunity to practice English thinking and expression.
The author, Professor Jay M. Feinman, is an expert in legal education and legal theory at Rutgers University (Rutgers). His book, Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About the American Legal System, is a photocopied edition (published by Legal Press in 2004) that has become a bestseller among Chinese law students for understanding the American legal system and learning legal English. Professor Feinman selected 1,001 of the most obscure and commonly used legal terms from the New Oxford American Dictionary, providing careful definitions and explanations (Carefully defined and explained), complete with examples. He also traces the etymology of each word, lists its different forms, and aims to present the meanings in a clear and lively manner, allowing readers to grasp the essence of each term. Additionally, Professor Feinman provides detailed comparisons of easily confused words, guiding readers in distinguishing their differences.
In terms of vocabulary volume, Professor Feinman's Oxford Dictionary of Legal Terms is not an extensive work, but this does not diminish its value. In an English context, this dictionary fulfills two primary functions: reference and learning. It greatly facilitates law students in finding the most obscure and commonly used legal terms while reading American legal English materials. At the same time, it serves as a practical learning dictionary, helping law students actively acquire and master common legal vocabulary.
We have added appendices to this dictionary, providing Chinese translations and annotations for all terms to aid students in comprehension and reference.
There are three additional points to note when using this dictionary:
1. The dictionary includes 10 short articlesed throughout, addressing common legal questions in daily life, such as how to choose a law school or how to respond in court. These articles also serve as a small window for Chinese law students to understand American legal culture.
2. Professor Feinman has listed some reference books at the end of the dictionary, covering legal professions, notable figures, and legal philosophy, among others.
3. The dictionary includes a pronunciation guide to help students learn correct pronunciation.
We hope this small dictionary becomes a trusted guide and companion for law students as they master the fundamental terms of legal English, accompanying them through their valuable years of study at law school.
