This novel extensively and profoundly reflects the barbarity and reactionary nature of American slavery, realistically depicting the cruel oppression and exploitation of black slaves by slave owners in the southern United States. It once inspired countless black slaves to fight for their fate. The protagonist of the novel, Tom, was originally a house slave of the slave owner Shelby, serving his master since childhood. As an adult, he became the farm manager, loyal to his master's interests. After Shelby failed in business, he decided to sell Tom and the slave Eliza's son, Harry, to pay off his debts. The plot revolves around Tom's several changes in ownership and the struggle of Eliza and George for freedom. After enduring many hardships, Eliza finally reunites with her husband, takes her son, and escapes to Canada, gaining freedom. Meanwhile, Tom refuses to run away and was later sold to the cruel and ruthless Legree. On the plantation, Tom, out of sympathy for his black compatriots, especially by helping two black female slaves escape, angers the master and suffers various forms of humiliation and torture. However, he remains steadfast and refuses to betray his compatriots, even to the point of death. As a result, Legree kills him alive. The novel, with its moving imagery and realistic descriptions, scourges the dark institution of slavery and has caused a great response both in the United States and abroad. The unforgettable black characters in the novel, such as Tom, Eliza, and George, have become household names for a time.
