Features: On a sunny afternoon in late spring of 2005, as the project leader, I sat in a newly opened café near Sichuan University Garden, writing this preface. My mood was relaxed, yet a bit uneasy. The relaxation came from the fact that the manuscript was finally completed, and the project was nearing its end. The difficulty of researching and writing such a topic was something we had not anticipated at the beginning. In fact, when we initially chose "Research on the Legislation and Operational Mechanism of German and Italian Criminal Simplified Procedures—With a Discussion on the Conception of China's Criminal Simplified Procedures Legislation" as the research subject for the China-EU Judicial Cooperation Project, we did not expect this topic to evoke such a sense of boredom and helplessness. It was only in the later stages of the research, after carefully reviewing relevant materials and extensively reading related works, that we gained some insights and developed a writing approach, ultimately completing the book and fulfilling the original purpose of the topic. The unease stemmed from the author's feeling that studying such a specific system, which has already been extensively discussed by scholars, would be extremely difficult to achieve comprehensive innovation. It would be neither easy to meet the author's own expectations nor to withstand the rigorous scrutiny of the readers. In fact, in recent years, the author has deeply felt the difficulty of in-depth research when completing some (: prescribed topic) projects but had no choice but to complete them on time according to the project requirements.
