Features: Without a doubt, musical theater is one of the most important and rapidly developing cultural achievements of the 20th century. Musical theater has undergone a full century of evolution and development, gradually maturing into the most vibrant and prosperous entertainment and cultural industry. In our country, musical theater is still in the exploratory and pioneering stage. Our understanding and awareness of Western musical theater are merely superficial. Although some related books and reference materials have been published, we rarely see live stage recordings (VCD or DVD). As for the soul of musical theater—music—our publications in this area are almost non-existent. In light of this, we have compiled this selection of famous songs from Western musical theater, carefully choosing 40 classic arias from 27 iconic works and translating them into Chinese. Additionally, we have provided brief textual introductions for each musical theater, covering the authors, creative processes, plots, and award history. This selection can serve as a reference for musical theater professionals, provide singers with opportunities to perform the original lyrics or the Chinese translations, and further enhance the understanding and appreciation of musical theater among music enthusiasts.
