Features: The 20th century was a period of intense transformation and rapid development in Chinese history. The modernization process that began in the mid-19th century accelerated in the 20th century, completing the historical shift from tradition to modernity. Academic research is an integral part of a society's culture and reflects these historical changes. The 20th century saw the emergence of numerous academic luminaries and a wealth of academic classics in Chinese humanities, and Chinese academic research gradually established a modern system of scholarly thought and research during this century. Studying and summarizing the history of humanities academic development in the 20th century is not only an examination of the century-long achievements in academic research across various disciplines but also a collective reflection on the modernization process of Chinese academic research, with profound significance. Western Literature Research, as part of the "History of 20th-Century Chinese Humanities Academic Research" series, aims to trace the historical process of Chinese scholars studying Western literature, as suggested by its title, and reflects on this period of history. The book is organized chronologically, with chapters focusing on important aspects or issues in Western literature research. Specifically, it is divided into two parts based on 1949. Each part contains several chapters, introducing and analyzing key aspects of Western literature research during their respective historical periods. The period covered in this book is not very long, but the historical materials available remain vast. Especially in the new era, the number of publications and works on Western literature research is so overwhelming that it is impossible to be exhaustive or comprehensive in summary and discussion, and whether the theoretical generalizations presented are correct may still be tested by time. The author can only make the best effort under the current conditions to gather materials, refine the essential aspects, grasp the facts, and clarify the overall situation and developmental trends of Western literature research in each period. On this basis, the author strives to highlight the key points of history as it truly was. Therefore, the author's narrative strategy is a combination of "breadth" and "depth," with "overviews" at various levels complementing the analysis of specific "texts." "Breadth" is necessary; without it, it is impossible to grasp the relatively complete picture of Chinese Western literature research over more than a century. Equally important is "depth," as only through rigorously selected "points" can one delve into specific research subjects, preventing the book from becoming vague or superficial. To better summarize the historical experiences and lessons of Chinese Western literature research, the author does not advocate avoiding difficulties but hopes to make new breakthroughs and developments in understanding.
