Features: Xu Gang was born in 1945 on Chongming Island, the descendant of a farming family. He graduated from the Chinese Department of Peking University. Xu Gang gained fame as a poet, with works including 100 Lyric Poems, Xu Gang’s Nine-Line Lyric Poems, and prose collections such as The Statue of Autumn, Night Journey Notes, and The Middle Path of the Forest. In the past decade, he has primarily focused on research on humans and nature, as well as environmental literature. His major works include The Woodcutter, Wake Up!, China, Another Crisis, Green Dream, Listening to the Earth, Guarding the Homeland, The Earth Chronicle, The Yangtze River Chronicle, and National Crisis. Additionally, many of Xu Gang’s works have been selected for university and high school Chinese language textbooks. Works such as Guarding the Dalu Swamp, Forest Sketches, The Little Grass, and The Little River have been included in Shanghai and Beijing high school Chinese textbooks or supplementary materials, as well as in textbooks for national vocational and technical schools. China’s Sand Line has been compiled into university reportage teaching materials. The Woodcutter, Wake Up! is listed in the Green Classics series. Xu Gang’s works have won awards such as the First Xu Chi Reportage Literature Award, the China Environmental Literature Award, the China Book Award, and the Bing Xin Literature Award. Xu Gang himself is a recipient of the Earth Prize.
