Features: To promote the fine culture of our nation, we have selected this book, featuring three outstanding Zen poems from ancient monks and literati, translated, annotated, and analyzed. The aim is to compile the essence of ancient Zen poetry, providing a rich and diverse collection of Zen poems for enthusiasts and readers. One part consists of Zen poetry that includes general Buddhist poems, as well as unique Chinese Zen school poems such as those for instructing disciples, opening the mind, and expressing admiration. The characteristic of this part of Zen poetry is its richness in philosophy and wisdom. Indeed, promoting Buddhist principles is promoting idealism. The other part reflects the lives of monks and literati as they practice and achieve enlightenment, such as poems about mountain dwellings, Buddhist temples, and traveling. The main characteristic of this part of Zen poetry is its portrayal of the empty, clear, tranquil, silent, and holy Zen realm and mindset. Most of the Zen poems selected in this book are renowned masterpieces with exceptional artistic expression. For example, some Zen poetry poems are witty and skillfully use metaphors. Some mountain dwelling and temple poems are deeply intertwined with scenery, subtle, and rich in imagery, possessing moving artistic charm and value. The format of this book is briefly described as follows:
1. The selected Zen poems are arranged in chronological order according to the birth and death dates of the authors, without distinguishing between monks or literati or their poetic styles. The book includes 300 poems by 108 authors.
2. The main text of the book is divided into four parts: author introductions, annotations, modern translations, and brief analyses. The author introductions, annotations, and analyses are concise and to the point. The analysis section focuses on explaining the Zen meaning, as it involves many Buddhist allusions and terms, which are appropriately explained. Due to the complexity and difficulty of some Zen poems, modern translations are provided to aid in understanding. However, the translation is not merely mechanical but aims to create vivid and readable new poems, meeting the criteria of faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance. Nevertheless, translating ancient poetry into modern language is a challenging task, and despite years of exploration, the author strives for excellence.
