Publisher:
Publish Date: 1994-09-01
Features: The narrator of the entire story is "I," the author, while the narrator of "The Chronicle of Peter" is Peter. After the author introduces him to the readers in the preface, he disappears without a trace. In the various stories, the most complex structure belongs to "Bella." The narrator of the story, the author, occasionally appears and occasionally disappears, allowing another narrator, Maxim Maximychevich, to recall the past. He acts as an audience. Now, when he tells "Bella" to the readers, Maxim Maximychevich is just a character in the story. His memories are a recollection nested within the author's memories. The Bella story he tells is merely the main body of the author's "Bella."
The aristocratic young officer Peter Chkaikovsky is bored with the St. Petersburg upper class. He travels to the Caucasus, hoping to escape his inner boredom and emptiness, but he only seeks excitement in pointless curiosity and adventure. He becomes obsessed with illusory and base desires, so his selfish love brings no happiness to anyone. He curses life, challenges everywhere, and eventually falls into deep regret and disillusionment.
