The China Financial Development Report (2005) (hereinafter referred to as The Report) is one of a series of annual publications compiled by the Institute of Finance of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The Report aims to systematically and comprehensively describe the development status of major fields in China's financial industry over the past year and comment on major financial events that occurred that year. Like the Report for 2004, this year's Report consists of three parts, but the order of the parts has been adjusted. The "Analysis of Economic Operation," which was in the second part last year, has been adjusted to the part for this year's Report. We first provide a general overview of China's macroeconomic operation in 2004 in terms of economic growth, investment, consumption, and prices, followed by a specific analysis of the behavior of the four major economic entities: households, enterprises, governments, and foreign entities. The second part is "Analysis of Financial Operation," which systematically records the main developments in China's financial industry in 2004, covering five areas: monetary policy, financial departments (due to the vast amount of content, this department is further divided into "Banking" and "Other Financial Institutions" as subcategories), financial markets, balance of payments, and international financial markets. The third part is "Special Analysis." The fields selected for this year include: financial reform and financial development, monetary policy, financial markets, real estate markets and real estate finance, financial regulation, and the insurance industry. The Report is a collective research achievement of the Institute of Finance, with the main authors being researchers, postdoctoral researchers, and doctoral students from the Institute of Finance. The entire report is overseen by Li Yang, Wang Guogang, and Wang Songqi. Li Yang was responsible for the overall editing of all the manuscripts.
