Features: Still-life sketching is an extension and development of (life drawing of plaster geometric forms). It covers a wide range of subjects, including fruits, vegetables, flowers, bottles, jars, and stationery, all of which can be used as subjects for sketching. Still-life sketching primarily trains our compositional and modeling skills. For beginners, on one hand, through still-life arrangements from simple to complex, they can master compositional principles, ensuring that the proportions of objects in the composition are well-balanced and the viewpoint is appropriately positioned. On the other hand, beginners can also arrange their own still-life setups to practice basic compositional knowledge (such as unity and variation; contrast and harmony; symmetry and balance; proportion and rhythm; static and dynamic effects, etc.), gradually improving their compositional abilities. The form structures of still-life objects are essentially combinations of different geometric shapes, but they are less rigid and more complex than plaster geometric forms. Therefore, in still-life sketching, we should place greater emphasis on understanding the relationships between form combinations and structural relationships.
In still-life sketching, various objects are composed of different materials, with varying textures—hardness, roughness, weight, thickness, etc. The representation of texture is primarily achieved through contrast, though it also relies on the accurate depiction of the object's tone. In still-life sketching, the principles of perspective should still be given attention to continuously deepen the understanding of perspective. The tools for still-life sketching can include pencils, charcoal, and charcoal sticks. The observation methods and steps for still-life sketching are roughly the same as those for (life drawing of plaster geometric forms). As long as we adopt an overall observational approach and practice consistently, we can gradually master the skills and techniques of still-life sketching.
