Features: Wang Maimai Book Brand, established in the 1980s. In 1987, a book titled The Spy Catcher by a former British MI5 intelligence officer caused a sensation in Western society, and China Central Television (CCTV) reported on it during the News Broadcast. As a result, the domestic publishing industry was inspired, scholars and translators worked tirelessly to search for publishing information, and relevant publishers did their utmost to seize publishing opportunities. However, it was the unknown Wang Maimai who emerged victorious from the crowd, signing a contract with Yangtze Literature and Art Publishing House. Making his debut, he achieved a resounding success, with the first edition of his translation of The Spy Catcher selling nearly 100,000 copies. The victory set the stage for further success, and in the following years, his translations of works such as Royal Sisters, Midnight Thoughts, Nancy Reagan's Memoirs, and The Unpublished Works of Mark Twain were published, each becoming bestsellers.
After 1990, due to teaching commitments, Wang Maimai began to compile college English textbooks and teaching materials for the CET-4 and CET-6 exams. From then on, bookstores near universities across the country continuously introduced best-selling Wang Maimai English books. In the blink of an eye, Wang Maimai English became the dominant force in the domestic college English teaching materials market, reigning supreme for over a decade. Today, the Wang Maimai English series has hundreds of titles, covering subjects from middle school to college and postgraduate entrance exams. Its brand has gained increasing popularity among readers due to its exceptionally clear explanations of textbook difficulties and its precise grasp of exam trends. Surveys show that many college and high school students across the country own Wang Maimai books, with almost everyone having at least one copy, a testament to their immense popularity.
This book is based on the Teaching Syllabus for College English Majors and the College English Test Band 8 Syllabus approved by the Ministry of Education. The book includes approximately 13,000 vocabulary entries. The College English Test Band 8 consists of six sections: Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Humanities Knowledge, Proofreading and Error Correction, Translation, and Writing. At first glance, the Band 8 exam may seem less direct in testing vocabulary compared to the CET-4 and CET-6 exams, which include a dedicated Vocabulary section. However, upon reviewing the Band 8 syllabus, it becomes clear that the exam's emphasis on vocabulary is no less rigorous than that of the CET-4 and CET-6. For example, in the Listening Comprehension section, the recording speed is approximately 150 words per minute, requiring students to listen to a 900-word lecture, complete a cloze exercise, and then answer 10 multiple-choice questions within 20 minutes. Similarly, in the Reading Comprehension section, students must read a passage of about 15,000 words and complete 20 multiple-choice questions in just 30 minutes.
