Features: Women, due to their anatomical features of having a uterus and ovaries, and physiological characteristics such as menstruation, leukorrhea, pregnancy, childbirth, and lactation, differ physiologically and pathologically from men. The uterus is the primary organ for menstruation and gestation, while the main function of the ovaries is to produce ova and secrete female hormones. The anatomical and physiological features of women make them endure more hardships than men. The nine months of pregnancy are their "patent," and after childbirth, raising children becomes their main task. Therefore, throughout history and across cultures, there has been the saying, "Mothers are great." During periods such as menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, lactation, and menopause, due to varying degrees of endocrine function changes, each period has its own characteristics. If attention is not paid or improper handling occurs, it may lead to adverse effects or even diseases. Thus, the care of women during these periods is extremely important.
Menstruation is the periodic shedding of the endometrium under the influence of ovarian hormones, accompanied by bleeding. The age of menarche for most women is between 13 and 18 years old. The interval between two menstrual periods is called the menstrual cycle, which is typically 28–30 days, with a deviation of about 7 days considered normal. The duration of normal menstruation is usually 3–6 days. The heaviest bleeding occurs on the 2–3rd day of menstruation, with a total volume of about 50 milliliters. Normal menstrual blood is dark red, consisting mostly of blood, along with mucus, shed endometrium, and vaginal epithelial cells. Anticoagulant substances are present in the endometrium, so menstrual blood does not clot. If changes occur in the period, amount, color, or quality of menstruation, menstrual disorders may arise.
During menstruation, neuroendocrine function changes, and both systemic and local resistance decreases. If menstrual hygiene is not maintained or emotional regulation is neglected, exposure to water and cold, excessive fatigue, or intense exercise can easily lead to menstrual disorders. Menstrual disorders are common and prevalent among women, causing numerous inconveniences and distress, and may also negatively impact harmonious and joyful families. Therefore, the prevention and treatment of menstrual disorders are extremely important and practically significant. Clinical practice has proven that menstrual disorders can be treated through dietary regulation. By selecting appropriate dietary methods based on differentiation, good therapeutic effects can be achieved.
