King Solomon's Mines is Haggard's breakthrough work. This adventure novel was published in 1885 and was warmly received by a wide readership, especially young people. It has been translated into many languages and remains popular worldwide. The novel is a masterpiece written by the author, based on real historical materials about South Africa, combined with the actual geographical environment of South Africa, and adapted with a compelling storyline. Sir Henry Curtis and Colonel John Good travel to South Africa together. On the ship from Cape Town to Natal Province, they meet hunter Alan Quatermain. Curtis asks the hunter to help him find his brother George, who disappeared while searching for Solomon's mines to the north. Curtis, Good, and Quatermain, with the help of Umbopa, enter the Matebeleland. They cross mountains and deserts, arriving in Kukuan. In the 19th century, there was a hunter named Alan Quatermain, an Anglo-Saxon who knew Africa better than anyone else. One day, he met a British nobleman named Henry Curtis. This British nobleman asked Quatermain to take him to a mysterious village in the heart of Africa. Henry hoped to use this opportunity to find news of his missing brother. At first, when Quatermain heard Henry's request, he was hesitant, but he decided to participate in this adventure to pay for his son's medical school tuition at Cambridge University. The four people who joined this adventure were Quatermain, the British nobleman Henry Curtis, the naval officer John Good, and a young native. This naval officer was also British, with too little experience and seemed more frivolous, easily emotional. The native was full of adventure spirit, kind, and physically strong. Although these four people had different motivations, they gradually formed friendships through the dangers and difficulties they faced together during the journey. They traversed the land, enduring the scorching heat of the desert, the bitter cold of snow and ice, and the boundless barren desert and lush forests, all of which exposed them to the harshness of nature. From these extremely harsh environments, one can see the character of the African people who live isolated behind natural barriers. The people there are both cruel and kind; they crave power but also long for sincerity, and they have a high level of understanding of life and death. On this strange and perilous land, they overcame all difficulties and obstacles, not only found the magical treasures but also experienced their own strength through winning battle after battle.
