Features: In the nearly hundred years past, the polymer materials industry has made remarkable progress. Today, polymer materials are no longer just substitutes for traditional materials such as metals, wood, cotton, linen, and natural rubber, but have become one of the fundamental materials in national economy and defense construction. At the same time, the three major components of polymer science—polymer chemistry, polymer physics, and polymer engineering—have become increasingly mature. Polymer physics is the discipline that studies the structure, properties, and their interrelationships of polymers. It has a very close intrinsic connection with the synthesis, processing, modification, and application of polymer materials. Only by grasping the intrinsic relationship and rules between polymer structure and properties can we guide the design and synthesis of polymers, rationally select and modify polymer materials, and correctly process and shape various polymer products. The polymer physics course is built upon the foundation of physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, solid-state physics, and material mechanics, while it is also the foundation for polymer materials and polymer forming and processing courses. It is one of the most important professional basic courses for polymer materials science and engineering in higher education. To adapt to the development trend of higher education teaching reform and accelerate the cultivation of high-quality and internationally competitive talents, following the requirement of "education facing modernization, the world, and the future," Zhejiang University actively promotes the use of English in teaching public basic courses and professional courses at the undergraduate level. As a core course in polymer materials science and engineering, polymer physics was the first to implement "bilingual teaching" in 2002 and has achieved significant results. To meet the needs of bilingual teaching, we have organized the writing of this bilingual (Chinese-English) polymer physics textbook, hoping to contribute to the teaching of polymer physics in China. In recent years, the research and development of polymer materials with various special functions (including biomedical polymers, photoelectromagnetic functional polymers, polymer separation membranes, adsorption and separation resins, and smart gels) and their devices have developed rapidly. This is precisely due to the profound understanding of the relationship between polymer structure and properties, and it also provides new content for polymer physics. However, considering that the fundamental research on functional polymers has not yet formed a relatively complete system, this book does not include the content of functional polymer structure and properties, which will be supplemented in the future.
