Features: Intercultural communication is a comprehensive system, which includes closely interconnected subsystems such as language, culture, society, and psychology, providing applicable behavioral norms and guidelines for communication. This book attempts to start with cultural teaching in cultural courses, selecting some themes reflecting cultural phenomena within a broader cultural framework for discussion and comparison, such as family, education, work, sports, and health care. It also includes relevant achievements from domestic and international research in the field of Sino-Western cultural comparison. The aim is to describe, explain, discuss, and compare these typical mainstream cultural phenomena of English-speaking countries with our own culture, thereby cultivating students' interest and understanding of the target language culture. This, in turn, encourages them to actively observe, analyze, compare, and evaluate, and to explore and research the differences between deep cultural layers and between Chinese and Western cultures, effectively improving their intercultural communication skills. The book aims to provide a foundation for students to objectively, systematically, and comprehensively understand the culture of English-speaking countries and to promote their own culture.
Each unit of this book mainly consists of two parts: Reading and Discussion and Classroom Activities, most of which are exploratory in nature. The reading materials are used to provide background knowledge, and classroom teaching largely involves open discussions with space left for students to think and explore. The appendix of the book provides some references for the discussion questions and classroom activities.
This book draws on the writing methods of relevant foreign textbooks and is adapted to the actual conditions of English teaching in China. It is suitable for college English teachers, undergraduate and graduate students of English majors, as well as English translators, tour guides, and English enthusiasts.
