The original name of Zuo Zhuan is Zuo's Spring and Autumn, which was later combined with Spring and Autumn as an interpretive text and referred to as Spring and Autumn Zuo Zhuan, abbreviated as Zuo Zhuan. Together with Gongyang Zhuan and Guliang Zhuan, it is known as the "Three Commentaries on the Spring and Autumn." However, Gongyang Zhuan and Guliang Zhuan solely interpret Spring and Autumn through meaning, whereas Zuo Zhuan is essentially an independently written historical book.
Zuo Zhuan narrates historical events in detail and with meticulous precision. For example, the account of "Zheng Bo Ke Duan Yu Yan" unfolds in layers yet remains clearly structured. Descriptions of wars are particularly a specialty of Zuo Zhuan, with many famous battles portrayed vividly and comprehensively. It not only focuses on depicting the course of battles but also pays attention to the political and diplomatic activities related to them, revealing the background and causes of conflicts. Take the Battle of Yanling between Jin and Wei, for instance—it is well-organized, explaining the origins and developments of the battle in a logical manner, making it an engaging part of the text. This laid the foundation for later novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
