Features: The spirit of freehand brushwork in Wang Yong's landscape paintings is also reflected in their elegance and simplicity. This is precisely an embodiment of his temperament and style, as well as a distinction from his teacher, Li Keran, whose realistic landscape paintings were more representational. The elegance of Wang Yong's landscapes, from an external perspective, seems to stem from his traditional literati qualities in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving, which are harmoniously integrated. Fundamentally, however, he found a (opportunity/mechanism), meaning he reinforced the latent modern sense or modern compositional awareness in some ancient masterpieces of landscape painting. He discovered a turning point in expressing entirely new imagery and artistic connotations through abstract brushwork. The mountains and waters, rocks and trees in his works possess a stronger visual impact compared to traditional techniques. Yet, the realm of Wang Yong's landscapes is also one of simplicity, isn't it? The ease of his brushwork, the simplicity of his colors, the reduction of forms, and even the subtle unrestrainedness in the diffusion of ink have transformed the misty vapor in his heart into the clouds and mist on the paper. Innovation in technique is undoubtedly a manifestation of Wang Yong's spirit of freehand brushwork. His composition and creation of scenes emphasize the grand scale and artistic atmosphere while avoiding excessive detail. The scenery often draws inspiration from the middle ground, while the artistic realm frequently takes cues from the lofty and distant, striking and vivid. His brushwork employs a pure and refined language of interwoven dots and lines. Within simplicity, he achieves rich layers of variation, and in spontaneity, he seeks the natural fusion of ink. Thus, he condenses Li Keran's layered accumulation and the meticulous outlining, hatching, and coloring of ancient landscapes into a combination and conflict of long lines and bold dots, where simplicity reveals variation while further emphasizing the calligraphic strength and the stone-and-metal-like resonance. As a result, the mountains in his works appear robust.
