Features: The theory of a socialist harmonious society is a major theoretical issue proposed by the new central leadership collective with Hu Jintao as General Secretary. Building a socialist harmonious society is a phased goal to be achieved in strengthening the Party's governance capacity and implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development. The Fourth Plenary Session of the 16th Central Committee proposed that it is necessary to persist in extensively and fully mobilizing all positive factors, continuously improving the ability to build a socialist harmonious society. It was the first time that the concept of a socialist harmonious society was introduced. In late February 2005, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held a special training course for leading cadres at the provincial and ministerial level to enhance the ability to build a socialist harmonious society. Comrade Hu Jintao emphasized at this special training course that it is essential to deeply understand the significant meaning of building a socialist harmonious society, to work solidly, and to vigorously promote social harmony and unity. Therefore, building a socialist harmonious society has been put before every Party member and public as an important task for the current work. To help cadres and the public study the basic issues related to the socialist harmonious society, understand what a socialist harmonious society is, how to build a socialist harmonious society, and other theoretical hot topics such as the six characteristics of a socialist harmonious society, we have organized teaching and research personnel from the Central Party School to compile this popular theoretical reader.
