Features: At the very source of the long river of ancient Chinese poetry, two unique gems bloom—the Book of Songs and the Chu Ci. The selection, annotations, and collected critiques of this book are primarily intended to help a broad readership explore and appreciate these two gems. The book selects 187 out of the 305 poems in the Book of Songs. In terms of selection intent, apart from focusing on thoughtfulness and artistry, it also pays attention to the diversity of themes, the uniqueness of styles, the brevity of length, and the simplicity of language. As a result, the "Folk Songs" rich in folk flavor and the "Little Odes" imbued with resentment and satire are selected more frequently, while the "Great Odes" that exalt literary and martial virtues and the "Hymns" that religious atmosphere are selected less. This selection aims to bridge the gap between the poetic rhythms of ancient times and the lives and psychology of modern readers. The annotations, explanations, and collected critiques in this book are all based on the principle of aiding readers, without academic novelty. The Book of Songs and the Chu Ci originated over two thousand years ago, with archaic and profound language. Despite the annotations and explanations by scholars over the centuries, there remain numerous conflicting opinions. As a popular reader, this book provides annotations for any words or phrases that may be difficult for general readers today, without delving into etymological research, merely indicating their meanings within the context of the poem. For cases where there are significant disagreements among scholars, a more fitting interpretation is chosen based on the overall understanding of the poem, without making distinctions between right or wrong. Occasionally, new interpretations are offered, but they are merely personal views or may make the poems more accessible to modern readers, with no intention of being deliberately unconventional.
