Features: Sketching, traditionally refers to a painting expression method that briefly captures the characteristics, movements, and expressions of objects within a short time using simple drawing tools (such as pencils, pens, brushes, paper, etc.), with concise lines. Sketching training should first master the basic proportions of the human body. Generally, the height of the human body is set as seven to seven and a half head lengths, while attention should also be paid to the differences in proportions between men and women. A seated human figure is typically five to six head lengths, while a crouching figure is usually three and a half head lengths. To quickly grasp the basic form of the human body, we can summarize it as "one vertical, two horizontal, three volumes, and four limbs." The ways to learn sketching can be roughly divided into: life drawing, copying, and memory drawing. These three are usually practiced together. During the practice process, some "slow drawing" training should be appropriately conducted. Through this more in-depth research phase compared to sketching, students' ability to deeply depict and their comprehensive skills can be fully unified, which is a necessary supplement to sketching. Sketching plays a very important role in (sculpture) practice. Currently, many art academies use character sketching as an examination item in their admission process to test students' painting skills and artistic qualities. For candidates, sketching well is a basic way to improve their (sculpture) skills and a key to successfully passing the fine arts college entrance examination. Over the years, the examination requirements for sketching in art academies can be roughly summarized as complete composition, accurate shaping, and the observation and expression skills reflected in the work. Sketching composition and shaping do not require meticulous accuracy and completeness. Sketching leans more toward capturing the spirit, feeling, and overall relationships of the form, with concise brushwork and lively shaping. The sketching examples selected in this book are accurate in shaping and concise yet vivid in depiction, hoping to provide some inspiration and help for candidates.
