Features: The study of sketching portraits holds a very important position in the entire process of learning sketching. Portrait training is one of the key subjects in character sketching. Understanding and familiarizing oneself with the proportions and structures of the human head, as well as its distinctive features, is essential for every student learning sketching. Since a person's spiritual demeanor and distinctive features are primarily concentrated in the head, the importance of learning sketching portraits is quite evident.
When learning sketching portraits, in addition to paying attention to the basic concepts of sketching such as the outline, value, proportions, perspective, lines, volume, space, and texture, one must also be familiar with the anatomical knowledge that affects the head's external features, as well as the basic proportional relationships of the facial features. These are fundamental and essential knowledge for beginners to systematically master the basics of portrait sketching and shape expression.
Value drawing, line-based drawing, and the combination of line and value are the most commonly used techniques for sketching portraits. Among these, value drawing is the most versatile, and most students tend to use this method during portrait sketching. Value drawing utilizes the varying levels of light and shadow and the changes in clarity to shape and represent the subject. It is relatively easy for beginners to grasp and understand this method, and it also tends to produce immediate results. Line-based drawing pays less attention to light and shadow and focuses more on the expression of structure and the transitions of form lines. All lines have variations in weight, clarity, thickness, and thinness. It differs from traditional Chinese ink line drawing but somewhat resembles structural sketching in design.
The combination of line and value is a comprehensive method that integrates both value and line, often used in sketches. This book is primarily aimed at students' portrait sketching training, divided into different topics, including a 3/4 side view of a young woman, a front view of a young man, a side view of a young woman, and a side view of an elderly woman. Each topic includes explanations of portrait knowledge, demonstrations of drawing steps, and critiques of outstanding works, striving to provide detailed and highly instructive content to help students as much as possible.
