Features: This textbook was developed in accordance with the arrangements made at the "National Planning Textbook Work Conference for Vocational and Technical College Process Equipment and Control Programs" held in Changsha, Hunan, in October 2003. It was reviewed and approved by the National Chemical Industry Vocational and Technical Education Teaching Guidance Committee and serves as a specialized elective course textbook. It is suitable for students majoring in Process Equipment and Control, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, and Mechanical and Electrical Application Technology. It can also be used as a reference book for English reading by engineering technicians in related fields. Foreign language proficiency is a special skill and ability for students after graduation, whether in employment, further studies, or transitioning to different work fields. Basic English addresses the fundamental issues of mastering English in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The teaching objective of specialized English is to expand professional vocabulary, improve the speed and ability to consult English-Chinese technical dictionaries, master the syntactic features and translation techniques of scientific and technical English, and enhance the ability to read professional English materials. Based on the characteristics of the profession, this book selects 30 units, including topics such as machinery, electrification, computer applications, instrumentation and automation, pumps and compressors, separation machinery, pressure vessels, towers, reactors, heat exchangers, refrigeration and air conditioning. Each unit consists of a text, words and phrases, text notes, supplementary reading materials related to the text, and exercises. At the end of the book, there are translations of the texts and reading materials, as well as answers to the exercises. This book is edited by Associate Professor Zhang Liming, with Associate Professors Wu Haibin, Lin Huizhu, and Liu Fuxin, and Senior Engineer Li Zhiping contributing to its writing. Associate Professor Sun Jianjun served as the chief reviewer, with Ding Chuan'an and Associate Professor Ye Mingsheng also participating in the review. The writing is as follows: Zhang Liming wrote Part 1 and Part 5; Wu Haibin wrote Part 2; Liu Fuxin wrote Part 3; Li Zhiping wrote Part 4; Lin Huizhu wrote Part 6; and Teachers Qiu Xin, Liu Sha, and Sun Jumei were responsible for the input and layout of the manuscript. Dr. Lou Jidong from the University of Oklahoma in the United States and President Yan Huigeng from Changzhou Institute of Engineering Technology provided extensive materials and proofread the translations. Chairman Wang Shaoliang of the National Chemical Industry Vocational and Technical Education Teaching Guidance Committee and Associate Professor Du Cunchen from Xuzhou Institute of Engineering Technology offered many suggestions for this book. Teachers Zhu Chunjuan and Wang Lin assisted in proofreading the translations. Teachers Qiu Xin, Liu Sha, and Sun Jumei were responsible for the input and layout of the manuscript. Gratitude is expressed to all mentioned above. Due to our limited knowledge and teaching experience, there may be errors and inaccuracies in this book. We sincerely welcome readers to point out any mistakes or suggestions for improvement.
