Features: Sketching is primarily a quick and reliable means of solving (shape) problems. It is a method for painters to understand and familiarize themselves with the structure and laws of motion of objects. There are many factors involved in drawing good sketches, with the most important being the observation method. Beginners should first train their eyes and observe objects, studying and analyzing them. Starting from the whole, grasp the overall form of the object, highlight key features, emphasize major characteristics, capture the impression, and quickly depict the object's dynamic posture, structure, and spirit. While capturing the general shape, pay attention to the in-depth and detailed portrayal of major features. Throughout the process of sketching, learn to use comparison, observing the relationships and proportions between the top, bottom, left, and right. In comparison, accurately depict the object and observe it with depth, going beyond the surface to understand the essence, not being misled by clothing or attire. Sketching differs from long-term drawing in that the subject is fleeting. From observation to memory and putting pen to paper, the coordination between the eyes and hands quickly captures the typical and vivid dynamic posture and image, reflecting this strong impression onto the paper. When practicing sketching, it is generally advisable to start slow and then speed up, begin with static subjects and then dynamic ones, start simple and then become more complex, and progress from writing to memory. Only through gradual and persistent practice can one achieve results. In my teaching, I adopt a method of intensive training, which is an excellent way to quickly improve sketching skills. This involves dedicating a period of time (about a semester) in the lower grades of art schools to increase the volume of sketches and intensify training. Through the process of transforming quantity into quality, focus on breaking through certain issues. Diligence can compensate for shortcomings, and practice can lead to skill. This helps achieve a certain level of sketching ability, after which one can continuously consolidate, improve, and deepen their skills. Regarding the techniques and skills of sketching, this is not elaborated on here. Sketching has a technical aspect, but its greater significance and value lie in its role as a medium connecting the painter with life. When facing life with a brush in hand to complete a sketch, it is precisely the process of the painter fully immersing themselves in observing, studying, and experiencing life, gaining a comprehensive understanding of it. Long-term sketching enables painters to extensively and deeply engage with society, nature, and people. It allows them to capture beautiful images and scenes in life and discover moving artistic creation materials. As aesthetic awareness continues to improve, sketching also reflects the painter's artistic taste and style. A good sketch itself is true, simple, and natural, representing the painter's emotional colors and artistic cultivation.
