Features: This book strives to incorporate the new developments in management accounting theory and practice from Europe and America since the mid-to-late 20th century. At the same time, it dedicates a certain amount of space to introducing classic content in traditional management accounting. The book is divided into five parts and sixteen chapters. Part I serves as the introduction to the book, providing an overview of management accounting from three aspects: management accounting information, value creation, and basic cost concepts. Information, value creation, and cost management are the three pillars of management accounting and also the three main threads running through the book. Part II introduces major modern cost management techniques, including activity-based costing systems, strategic cost analysis, target costing, constraint theory, and life cycle costing. Part III focuses on the essence of traditional planning and decision-making accounting, including cost behavior, variable costing, cost-volume-profit analysis, short-term management decisions based on relevant costs, and capital investment decisions. Part IV covers operational control accounting, introducing budgeting, standard cost systems, time management, quality management, as well as productivity, marketing efficiency, and customer profitability management. Part V discusses management control accounting, explaining performance evaluation and management control, performance evaluation of responsibility centers, and compensation incentive plans. This book is written to meet the teaching needs of MBA programs and can also be used as a teaching material for undergraduate students in management-related disciplines. It is also suitable for to read and reference. During the writing process of this textbook, the following features have been strived to be reflected:
1. In terms of structure, the chapters are arranged as much as possible according to the internal logical rules of management accounting to facilitate readers in understanding and grasping the theoretical and methodological system of management accounting.
2. In terms of content, it attempts to incorporate the new practices of management accounting from internationally renowned enterprises in the past decade while retaining the essence of traditional management accounting, striving to achieve a balance between theory and practice.
3. In terms of writing style, it emphasizes both rigor and readability, ensuring the accuracy of concepts while making the discussion of relevant issues clear, easy to understand, and supported by numerous examples to help readers grasp the relevant theories and ideas.
4. To facilitate teaching, self-assessment questions, exercises, classroom cases, and comprehensive cases are arranged for the use of teachers and students. At the same time, main references are provided at the end of each chapter, allowing readers to further read relevant works and articles for a deeper understanding of related issues.
