Features: This textbook (Second Edition) is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Chinese. The selected vocabulary primarily consists of Level A words from the "Outline for Chinese Language Proficiency Vocabulary and Characters" published by the National Office for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. Based on the original textbook, this new edition has been revised in some lessons and supplemented with additional new lessons, expanding from two volumes to now include three volumes and an advanced section. Following the principles of language learning and the guidelines for beginner oral Chinese teaching, and drawing on effective teaching practices, the following two writing principles have been adopted:
First, shifting from a word-centered approach focusing on semantics before pragmatics to a sentence-centered approach focusing on pragmatics before semantics;
Second, while students are learning common sentence patterns and simple dialogues for beginner oral Chinese, they begin training in longer passages.
To implement these two principles, the textbook adopts the following teaching approach:
Starting from the first lesson, students directly engage in speaking practice, learning and correcting pronunciation issues in the context of natural speech flow. Phonetics and intonation remain a key focus throughout the teaching process. In the exercise sections, we have designed various activities, and each lesson includes dialogues and short narrative passages. The dialogues and passages are presented alongside Chinese characters and Pinyin. All dialogues and language points are accompanied by English translations, compiled as an appendix at the back of the book. Notes provide explanations for the language and cultural points in the text. Each lesson features a wealth of exercises with lively and diverse formats, incorporating both text and visuals to enhance communicative value.
"Did You Know?" is a supplementary section that complements the lessons, offering oral Chinese tips or cultural knowledge tailored to students' interests and needs, serving as a reference for teaching.
This textbook is accompanied by an audio CD, published by Peking University Audiovisual Press.
