Features: The fourth edition of the textbook "Microbiology and Immunology" has been in circulation for five years since its publication in 1999. In April 2002, the writing conference for the fifth round of planning textbooks for pharmacy programs in medical colleges across the country was held in Wuhan. The conference once again emphasized that the training objective of pharmacy programs is to cultivate pharmacists capable of working in the pharmaceutical field. Planning textbooks must reflect the "Three Basics" (basic theories, fundamental knowledge, and essential skills), "Three Specifics" (specific target audience, specific requirements, and specific constraints), and "Five Qualities" (ideological nature, scientific rigor, inspirational value, advanced content, and applicability). The conference also required that the revision of textbooks should strive to adapt to the needs of social progress and the development of the health sector in the 21st century. Textbooks serve as a carrier of knowledge that reflects teaching content and methods, a fundamental tool for teaching, and an important guarantee for deepening teaching reform, comprehensively promoting quality education, and cultivating innovative talents. In accordance with the spirit of the conference and feedback from other institutions after using the fourth edition, the writing team thoroughly discussed and revised the content and organization of the textbook chapter by chapter and section by section. Significant improvements were made in chapter layout, content arrangement, and selection, as well as in the coordination of text and illustrations, aiming to enhance teaching quality and foster students' spirit of exploratory learning and thinking. The new edition continues to use the title of the fourth edition, "Microbiology and Immunology," and is divided into three main parts: Immunology, Microbiology, and the Application of Microbiology in Pharmacy. Immunology is an interdisciplinary frontier discipline that intersects with many other fields. Its theories and experimental technologies have advanced rapidly, achieving remarkable results. Therefore, we have appropriately supplemented the new theories and technologies in immunology, especially their application in pharmacy. For the microbiology section, based on the principles of "clear concepts, highlighting key points, comprehensive coverage, simplifying complexity, and updating content," the content was carefully selected and comprehensively revised. All terms are uniformly used by the National Committee for the Revision of Natural Science Names in immunology and microbiology. Illustrations in some chapters are selected from accumulated teaching images and meticulously drawn line diagrams, striving to achieve a harmonious balance between text and illustrations for easier comprehension. The goal is to make the new edition more aligned with the current needs of higher pharmacy education and recent developments in China.
